True enjoyment. The Safety Expert is probably my most favorite Doug book to date.

At first though, I wasn't feeling much anticipation or excitement. It's a semi-stand alone story set in La La Land, which is fine no red flag there, but I am getting spoiled to Lucky charging in to save the day, and instead of him we get the nice, neat and rather boring — Mr. Ben Keller. The man with the motto, "Safety First!"

So, he's safe.
But, what's he gonna do? Run a yellow light?

Thing is and didn't realize, Ben's seemingly nondescript life has always, or at least for a long time now, been stormy. Hurricane strength. Just we meet him in the eye prior to him exiting it, and the wind and rain is no less brutal, no less intense than from when he first entered it years ago. So much so that he is going to have to do more than wait and weather it out. He will need to fight and scrape his way through if he is to have any chance of escaping this phony oasis and nightmare of his.

Anticipation and excitement restored.

A note of caution though, not everyone in the eye makes it out from the storm with Ben, or even wants to, but one of those who does is a breath of fresh, sweet air that is what makes this thrilling story even that much more delightful to follow. Occasionally, I'd re-read or think about those parts just for the enjoyment of seeing those two together.

You have to agree. Not sure? Only one way to find out.

This was a real cliffhanger. It was difficult to put it down. I'm looking forward to more like it from Doug Richardson .
Doug Richardson's latest novel, The Safety Expert, kept my heart pounding. I opened the book after I reached the airport about a half hour before boarding my flight. By the time I was called to board the plan, I was completely drawn into the story. Fortunately, I was reading the paperback, and not the version. I would have been very upset if I had to put the book down for 20 minutes while the plane took off and landed. At one point, I was so totally caught up in the book I apparently said out loud -- "Oh no, please don't." The young lady sitting next to me on the plane asked me if I was all right. Very embarrassing for someone who usually does not talk to other people on a plane. I think she monitored my behavior the rest of the flight, so all I could do was recommend the book to her.

From the opening death bed confession followed by a quick juxtaposition to an ordinary mundane weekday morning commute on a Los Angeles freeway, the book kept me engrossed. I had trouble putting it aside when I landed, and I could not wait to finish it that night. It was difficult falling to sleep once I did finish it.

The genius behind the book is how the author accelerates the action and suspense by his in-depth character analysis. Ben, the safety expert, his wife Alex, Gonzo, the single mom cop, Stu, the contractor, and his wife Pam all appear normal as you meet them, but each has a haunting past that instructs their behavior. The mechanics of the plot bascially revolve around exposing the character flaws of each character and the complicated entaglements they are drawn into as a result of the initial death bed confession. The story is infused with strange decisions made by each of the characters as their past lives continually interfere with their more normal current lives. Not being able to escape the past, their interactions with each other escalate towards the unpredictable.

I felt like I knew some of the characters, and then I was afraid that I really might. These are people we see walking down the street, ordering a cup of coffee in front of us or dropping their kids off at school. Ben is not a complicated man. Any of us might be Ben -- if we had experienced the tragedy and misfortune visited upon him. Nontheless it is surprising to watch his obsessive behavior evolve. Stu appears to be an everyday kind of guy, a general contractor just getting by. It is a tribute to the author's skill that the reader can be drawn in so deeply to the self-absorbed soul of such an evil, bad guy. Although Stu's final explosion becomes predictable, it is still surprising. Do I know someone like this?

The Safety Expert is an engaging thriller. From Ben's opening freeway commute to his Burbank office, the book is off and running with plenty of sizzle and action, and it does not slow down until it concludes on the freeway where it started. Readers will enjoy this entertaining roller coaster ride.
It's been a long time since I was drawn into a thriller so compelling, I couldn't put it down. Even the latest by some of the masters of the genre have left me flat. But THE SAFETY EXPERT is a different animal.

One of the things I loved, something I felt untraditional for the genre, was that the plot did not center and accelerate around big reveals, but was propelled by smaller reveals about the characters themselves. I found it fascinating to walk in the shadows of these characters as they discovered new facets of their humanity, or rediscovered deeply buried aspects of their nature, dislodged and raised again to the surface by circumstance. But, don't think for a second this is a simple "man (men) pushed to the brink" story - It's a story about being forced to look in the mirror, both rear view and full length, and making peace with what stares back, no matter the cost. I love how just about every character tried to sweep the past under the rug, only to find it seeping out the sides.

THE SAFETY EXPERT is just terrific. I can't recommend it enough.

Bonus...Doug Richardson is also a working screenwriter in Hollywood (DIE HARD 2, BAD BOYS, MONEY TRAIN, HOSTAGE) and has a blog where he speaks to his experiences navigating the Hollywood waters. Also extremely entertaining. [...]

RB
Doug Richardson is a canny and observant writer. He has been blessed with a wonderful mind for dialogue, and fills his pages with vital, riveting and thoroughly compelling drama. As one of Hollywood's top screenwriters, he draws his character's dialogue quickly and sharply. The writing is so natural that the characters instantly spring to life.

The immense detail, elaborate settings and continually mounting suspense, make "The Safety Expert" a non-stop pleasure ride from beginning to end. Be advised do not begin reading this book unless you have no other plans for the day. It's that good!
